Free! Episode 12 Review →

Rin is seriously the master of “crazy-plans-that-actually-work”. I just imagine him hearing about the MakoHaru fight and somehow deciding that the best course of action is whisking Haru away to Australia.

A lot of people seem particularly upset at the RinHaru fanservice but c’mon,…

Rin’s a friend, but in a different way. He’s not as close to Haruka as Makoto is - that whole scene in the hotel with the one bed proved it. We’ve already seen so many times how uncomfortable with people OTHER THAN MAKOTO Haruka is.

It was harmless fanservice. Even the writers know that Makoto’s and Haruka’s relationship is not something they can dabble with too much.

Can people stop hating on Rin for the sake of their ships please he’s such a sweetheart. I know he’s taking Haru to Australia, but Rin’s not the one who almost got pushed off a balcony (fishboy got some muscle). Makoto’s got hardcore unconditional love going on seriously it’s not that hard to see so pLEASE stop Rin is a good boy and they all just want Haru to be happy.

And don’t forget, Makoto and Rin are in cahoots about this. Makoto probably bought Haru a ticket.

I have NO idea how this series will end…

and I hope it ends in a satisfactory place. If Free ends in a way that is not satisfactory on all accounts (Nagisa and Rei being okay with saying goodbye to their friends, Rin going to an international school to swim, Sousuke being okay at home with his family and getting emails from Rin, Nitori and Momo continuing to swim, and finally, Haruka attending a university or a trade school, or at least having something solid he can rest his future on, and continuing his close relationship with Makoto who is having the best time student teaching at his Tokyo university - I bet it’s Waseda because Mako-chan is so smart and special~~)…. I will be so disappointed, and I don’t think I’ll invest my time in a Kyoani anime again.

How do you think the series will end? Will there be another season?

I haven’t done one of these yet, but I feel like I wanna set some hearts at ease in regards to Makoto and Haruka in Free.

I have had a lot of thoughts brewing about in my head (… speaking of thoughts, the slower-wheel-thing that all these sites are taking part in today for Net Neutrality, good on you! Support it, everyone! A free internet for all!) … about Makoto and Haruka’s relationship, as a whole, in this particular season. Mostly about what’s just recently been happening.

Makoto is growing up, everyone. He’s doing it by LEAPS and BOUNDS. I have never in my life encountered a 17-year-old male who thinks with the level-headedness of an adult. Granted - I don’t know too many 17-yr-olds. I’m 28, myself. I DO know a number of young men MY age who ACT like they’re 17 and THINK like they’re 17, though, so I’m impressed. Makoto was ALWAYS wise beyond his years and godDAMN but his parents ought to be proud.

Haruka, on the other hand, didn’t have much in the way of role models growing up. He didn’t have the loving support that Makoto has always received from the Tachibana family (The fact that he is sociable at all is, I think, largely attributable to the Tachibana family and to Makoto, who only ever showed Haru nothing but love). As such, I don’t think Haruka is very good at encountering himself. I don’t think he’s yet mastered the art of confronting himself inside his own head - which is a very adult thing to do. I know this because for five years I have struggled with this same concept. It takes TIME. (That Makoto was able to think about his future, come to a decision about it on his own, all the meanwhile worrying about Haruka not being able to do the same astounds me. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a man.)

So in this latest episode, under the fireworks, we see the result of this paradox. Haruka can’t help it. He’s going at a slower pace. And for a while, Makoto was more or less… well, not OKAY with it, but he said it himself: He wanted to let Haruka go at the pace they’d both become accustomed to (hence, character song). He had to stop that because it was beginning to adversely affect the team and he could see Haruka was breaking under all that pressure. And yeah - to think about your future and to have NO IDEA or TOO MANY IDEAS, feeling “not right” with yourself, that’s a lot of $%^&ing pressure. I can’t even IMAGINE what it must feel like for a Japanese young adult… there’s a lot of cultural background there that I shouldn’t get into. So, Makoto says, “You’re NOT fine!”

And then Haruka blows up at him because he bottles things up and then has to explode. I used to do that too… Oh hon, that’s hard. Makoto’s confession hits him like a betrayal. Makoto was the ONE THING that was forever an anchor for Haru. He was ALWAYS there. I mean, ALWAYS. These two spent almost every waking hour together, alone. Haru lives by himself because his parents are often away and his grandmother passed. Makoto’s family looks after him. Makoto is always, always there. Suddenly…. he won’t be *always* there anymore. Suddenly, Makoto has become his own person, separate from Haru, and Haru never saw. He never noticed this happening. I think Haruka might start to feel GUILTY now on top of everything else. I think Haruka and Makoto… for the next episode, they’ll be a little frigid and tense. Makoto still desperately wants to help Haruka feel better. He wants to desperately make Haruka understand that for Haruka’s own sake, they ought to talk about the future. Makoto gets that he can’t be Haruka’s anchor anymore; he needs to make sure that Haruka understands this as well. This is part of growing up. They are becoming adults. They can’t bask in the easiness of childhood any longer.

THAT SAID, SHIPPERS: Makoto and Haruka will ALWAYS love each other. They have loved each other from day one; they will continue to love and care for each other. But it would be unhealthy for Makoto to sacrifice his chance at an individual, independent life for the sake of Haruka. He wants to make sure Haruka will be okay before he leaves. Bless him, because he’s thinking like the adult he’s becoming. Haruka is confused right now, but I have faith that he will figure it out. He’s thinking about it constantly. That fight between Haruka and Makoto under the fireworks was NECESSARY and it may even have been HEALTHY. It’s a chance for Haruka to leap over the wall that’s inside his head; it’s a chance for Makoto to express himself independent of Haruka.

But they’ll always, always love each other. They are soulmates. They are kindred spirits. They know each other more than anyone else knows them. They are intimate. And that’s special. I sure as hell don’t have something like that, and sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I had. Sometimes I feel guilty myself, watching Makoto and Haru in Free, because I wonder if I should ever have “left” my childhood friends behind. But I didn’t, you know? They’re always with me. And they helped to shape who I am today. I don’t love them any less just because we are apart as adults.

AS FOR RINHARU: Guys, Haruka is not going to Australia with Rin. He’s seeing him off. Makoto sent Rin a text because he knew that if HE can’t break through Haruka’s wall, he knows Rin has the sense (Rin has also been growing a lot!) to guide Haruka out of the muck that’s his mind now. Rin DOES have sense. He has a steadiness and can be objective in a way that Makoto simply cannot be. Smart move, Makoto. Let’s wish Rin good luck in Australia; I’m happy that Rin can accomplish his dream for himself, and can also live faithfully knowing he’d have made his father proud.

Good luck, Haru! Keep fighting! You can do this, and you’re not alone! Thanks everyone who has read this~~ Replies and discussion welcome, but please, no hate. Let’s all agree that we love this story and these characters (although I personally feel like Kyoani really rushed things along in this season………..) .

**EDIT: I totally forgot that week is Obon week and it’s a holiday. If Rin’s got two tickets (how…? A friend?) then it’s pretty awesome if he takes Haruka with him. And I don’t know why, but I forgot it was a holiday. So ignore that bit about not going to Australia. … Hell, Haruka, I would. (Haru and Rin speaking English go!)

Newfoundland. <3 I’d love to live there. I don’t think my S.A.D. could handle it though.
